Early Club, Collage and Pub Gigs - 14th March 1981 to 31st October 1981
Marillion Fish's First Practice Session Leyland Farm Studios, Buckinghamshire, England 1/2/81 AU 7 2CD

Comments (incorrectly) Traded as 3/3/81 - Red Lion Pub, Bicester, England

There is a lot of confusion around as to when this tape was originally made and I have seen it dated from 1980 right through to the middle of 1981 but I suspect the real date will never be known. Here's what I do know. On 2nd January the then three members of the band record a demo called "Close"  this was then sent to the two new members, Fish and Dis Minnitt who then came down to join them to rehearse that - now called "The Web" - and other songs.
The band stayed at Leyland Hill Farm studios for up to ten weeks, before their first actual gig on 14th March at the Red Lion Pub in
Bicester. This tape is clearly the band in rehearsal as you can hear them talking between the songs, and despite the title, clearly isn't the first time Fish had played with them, so it would be pretty safe to assume it comes from near the end of the rehearsal process as they are playing a full set. Of course, given that there are some edits between tracks it may not all be from the same day, or they may have just stopped the tape between numbers. Now, the copy I had of this hadn't been tracked and was straight from an audio tape of unknown generation with disc 1 containing just two track and disc 2 a single one. So, I ripped both to .wav, made some slight adjustment with Cool Edit Pro (mainly reducing the hiss), and then tracked them correctly with Wave CD. Nothing else was done to them but there is a noticeable difference between "Snow Angel" and the other tracks (from the first file) on CD1.The balance is slightly off in places and there's some change in volume, and Fish's vocals tend to blend into the background on occasion, but overall given the age of these songs they don't sound rather good although I don't know how that compares to other versions that are around.

Line Up: Fish - Vocals, Steve Rothery - Guitar, Diz Minnitt - Bass, Mick Pointer - Drums, Brian Jelliman - Keyboards

Track Listing: CD1 Time for Sale 5:12, Madcap's Embrace 8:47, Grendel 20:16, Snow Angel 7:49  CD2 Skyline Drifter 10:11, The Web 10:16, Herne the Hunter 11:32, Garden Party 9:04

Comments: The band play as a four piece following the sacking of the bass playing during the sound check.

Track Listing: Intro, He Knows You Know, The Web, Three Boots Down the Candy, Chelsea Monday, Charting the Single, Garden Party, Forgotten Songs, Margaret

Comments: Good early show and I'm not just saying that because I was there. One of John Martyr's eight performances with the band. Sound isn't great for FM show. Some splashing here and there. Back cover lists the wrong tracks.

Marillion Skytops 83 Skytops, Buffalo, NY, USA 26/7/83 AU 8.5 2CD

Comments: Balance takes a few minutes to settle but when it does the sound is very good it could almost be soundboard. From the troubled USA tour with Andy Ward

Marillion Rochester 83 Red Creak, Rochester, NY, USA 4/8/83 AU 8 2CD

Comments: From the troubled USA tour with Andy Ward Fish has monitor problems but, the recorded sound is good. There's also a lot audience talking - mostly through the monologues - with Fish yelling "shut up" but then he does talk an awful lot during this show as you can see from the track listing.

Line Up: Fish - Vocals, Steve Rothery - Guitar, Pete Trewavas - Bass, Andy Ward - Drums, Mark Kelly - Keyboards

Comments Tape wear and colour smudging don't spoil this German TV special from the band's last months with Fish. Two tracks are missing from the start of the set but that means the show starts with the locally relevant "White Russian". Fish's monologues are over dubbed in German.

Line Up: Fish - Vocals, Steve Rothery - Guitar, Pete Trewavas - Bass, Ian Mosley - Drums,  Mark Kelly  - Keyboards

Track Listing: White Russian , Sugar Mice, Fugazi, Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles, That Time Of The Night (The Short Straw), Waterwhole (Expresso Bongo), Lords Of Backstage, Blind Curve, Childhood's End?, White Feather, Kayleigh, Heart of Lothian, The Last Straw, Incommunicado, Garden Party, Market Square Heroes, Let's Twist Again, Market Square Heroes (cont)

Marillion Adieu Fish Fife Aid2, Craigtown Park, St Andrews, Scotland 23/6/88 AU/ MP3 9 2CD

Comments: Fish's last show with the band and what a great one it was too. Sound is a little patchy to start with but soon cuts into being so great you could think this was soundboard if it wasn't for the guy trying to get a cigarette from the taper!!!

Track Listing: CD1  The Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra), Slàinte Mhath, Assassing, White Russian, Sugar Mice, Fugazi, Warm Wet Circles CD2

Comments:
Single camera mostly filming from the back of the crowd shooting with a clear view over the heads of the audience. Picture quality is very good, although it shakes a bit in during the close ups. Sound is very good.  Playing not only in his (adopted) home town, but in the very Market Square he wrote a song about Fish pulls out all the stops up to, and including, taking a walkabout  in the crowd during "Vigil..." and, popping into the crowd for a smoke!! Then, of course, there's the first Marillion re-union to perform, what else, but Market Square Heroes.. Unfortunately, this was only filmed right from the back with no close ups. and it is cut up due to the filmer's battery running out. But, he's managed to put on a full version of the song, plus all of Fish's intro, as a separate title at the end from a second camera that was, it has to be said, even further back than the main one!!!
Line Up: Fish - Vocals, Frank Usher - Guitar, Chris Johnson - Guitar, Steve Vantsis - Bass, Gavin John Griffiths - Drums, Foss Paterson - Keyboards Guests (final track): Steve Rothery - Guitar, Ian Mosly - Drums, Mark Kelly - Keyboards, Pete Trewavas - Bass
